Overlooking the Susquehanna River in Towanda, Pennsylvania, The Weigh Station Cafe occupies a large brick building built in 1884. The structure, which was used as a freight depot, was utilized by several rail lines including Barclay, Lehigh Valley, State Line – Sullivan and Susquehanna – New York. The last load of freight left the Washington Street Station on March 31, 1976.
One cannot emphasize enough, the impact that railroads had in the development of Towanda as a commercial center, beginning with the first PA & NY train in September of 1869. During the mid 1800's, four freight trains, and nine coal trains arrived and departed from Towanda each way- every day. Train traffic even persisted on Sundays when their passing interfered with services at nearby churches. One of Towanda's passenger stations was located next door to the Weigh Station and still stands today.
Today, The Weigh Station Cafe embraces the historic atmosphere of the depot. A beautiful deck, with Pennsylvania Bluestone tables from Meshoppen Stone, allows the patrons a gorgeous view of the Susquehanna River. Inside a rustic decor compliments the great food, live entertainment and friendly service.
